A general pattern that comes up for me in studying EA that I'm trying to work through is discerning the difference between things like a 9th house Pluto in Gemini and how it's polarity point in the 3rd house in Sagittarius is different, when they are both working with the same archetypes. Same thing applies for SN/NN combinations when they are in each other's houses, like Libra NN in the 1st vs Aries SN in the 7th. How do you discern the nuance between opposites like this? Is there something that may help me wrap my mind around this scenario more?

Using Anais Nin, for example - she has the ruler of the SN conjunct the NN. If I am looking at her Pluto polarity point as the causal factor for actualizing the North Node, what is the inherent difference between her Pluto and the Pluto polarity point, since they both involve the same two archetypes? I'm leaning toward imagining her 3rd house activity being around writing and communicating (perhaps translating her inner experience through literature and her diaries, Moon in the 3rd house as well) versus the 9th house activity being more around studying a specific belief system? It feels a little murky to me though.

(Also.. I may have to look into Anais Nin more in general, I adore her. She has a really interesting chart and has catalogued her inner-experience extensively - she's a great study resource.)

Hi Sabrina,

What you are referring to are paradoxical charts or signatures. Here is what is in the EA Glossary about this:

Paradoxical chart - Lunar Nodes example

In the case of the South Node and North Node being in a paradoxical sign/house combo, there are still two different nodal rulers somewhere in the chart - one which points to the past and one which points to the future. In combination with Pluto and its polarity point, this is how we can ultimately understand the story of WHY the paradoxical chart to begin with. (Ari Moshe)

Paradoxical chart - example

A chart where house rulers are in the signs that are opposite to the natural rulers of those houses. The general rule of thumb is to help the person understand what the nature and causes are of the underlying paradoxes within them, and then to help them determine a way of resolving those paradoxes. Simple example: Pluto in Leo in the 11th house, South Node Cancer in the 10th, North Node Capricorn in the 4th, ruler of South Node Moon in Scorpio 2nd, ruler of North Node Saturn in Scorpio 2nd in the chart: deep, natural fear of loss and abandonment which has happened in many lives through misapplication of trust which, in turn, has caused the individual to emotionally and psychologically isolate themselves from others as a way of compensating for that, which in turn has caused them to feel very alone within the world, which then causes a deep need to connect with and/or be in at least one committed relationship of like mind, yet not knowing how to get there or make that happen because of the fears of abandonment, etc. A paradox.
The resolution in this case is to choose another who is not only of like mind, but one who is utterly self-reliant at the POINT OF ATTRACTION. The one who is self-reliant, self-empowered, etc. will not have a double agenda which could lead to a recreation of the past life dynamics leading to another misapplication of the trust which then leads to being used all over again. The underlying nature and causes of the paradox can be caused by any number of reasons. Each chart has its own unique signature. In the case of charts that do symbolize the core of paradoxes the symbols, in each chart, are the causes of those paradoxes. (Rad)

Same house, sign and planet combinations (eg Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 9th house)
I'll share what feel intuitive to me about this question. Something to think about: Jeff Green has taught that opposite sign house combinations are naturally paradoxical (like Gemini on the 9th) since it is a synthesis of two polar archetypes. It thus symbolizes the need for the Soul to learn balance in the current life. It has a very Libra energy to it. In the same way I think of same house sign combinations (Sagittarius on the 9th) as being very emphasized and single focused. All the meaning of Sagittarius would apply in a more direct way. It has a very Aries energy to it. Why is it that way? We'd really have to look at the chart and start with the core EA paradigm. It can mean many things, but the implication of it being very direct is clear. The strong focus of any archetype ultimately symbolizes something within the Soul - and there is a reason for it. Another thing to think about to exemplify this in a tangible way. Think of anyone you know who is a Leo Sun. Without intellectualizing it, can you see how they ARE a Leo? And of course there are many ways to be a Leo. That right there is a double Leo signature - and it would be more Leo'esqu if their Sun was in the 5th house. Same for Pluto in the 8th house for example. I know at least a few Pluto in Scorpio in the 8th house Souls. There are layers upon layers of meaning in that signature, but it is different for each Soul. Lastly I feel called to share with you that for me, the more information I receive from my clients the better I am able to interpret their charts as it illuminates the real living life context for the signatures. My intuition kicks in and I tend to see a lot more of the Soul story through the chart in ways that my linear mind simply would not have been able to grasp on its own. (Ari Moshe)

Hi Sabrina,

The underlying issue here to help you understand your question is the fact the the houses come first in any analysis, then the signs. So in your example of Nin her Pluto is in the 9th House: that comes first. Then the fact that it is in Gemini. So this would then mean that her Soul has been desiring to understand, to know, the cosmological explanations for life itself: 9th House. Because her Pluto is in Gemini this then means that she has desired to explore and investigate as many possible ideas, philosophies, religions, beliefs systems, and inner pondering and musings as possible in order to do so.

The underlying issue within this is the Soul's desire to intuitively understand, to know, what the actual underlying natural laws are for Creation itself in order to have a synthesized whole of understanding the very nature of what life is: the inherent archetype of the 9th House, Sagittarius, and Jupiter. Yet with her Pluto in Gemini that core understanding, knowledge, has yet to occur because of the ongoing QUESTIONING that correlates with the archetype of Gemini, Mercury, and the 3rd House.

So, in essence, in the prior lives leading to her life as Nin this is where her Soul left it off. With the polarity point of Pluto being the 3rd House first, then the sign Sagittarius second, this then means that the Soul is continuing on in this evolutionary process with THE INTENTION AT ARRIVING AT THAT CORE UNDERSTANDING OF ALL THE NATURAL LAWS OF CREATION that then serves as the organic whole through which, and because of, all of life is then UNDERSTOOD CONSISTENTLY: Pluto's polarity sign being Sagittarius within the natural Gemini house.

So to with her S.Node in Aries being in the 7th House. Again, the houses come first in the understanding of all the symbols in the birth chart. With the S.Node being in the 7th in Aries, of itself, this would then mean, in any birth chart, that the Soul has been desiring to learn about it's own individuality IN THE CONTEXT OF RELATIONSHIP: BEING IN THEM. Thus, thus through contrast and comparison, the 7th House, the Soul learns about it's own unique individuality. In essence, there is a NEED to be in relationships in order to understand it's inherent individuality.

With her N.Node in Libra with Mars, the ruler of her S.Node, this then correlates to the fact, prior to the current life as Nin, that her Soul has been desiring to learn and understand about it's own inherent individuality FROM WITHIN ITSELF FIRST: to be in RELATIONSHIP TO ITSELF FIRST.  The N.Node and Mars being in the Aries house first, then the signs Libra second. Thus, the inner orientation to relationships shifts from I NEED TO BE TO I WANT TO BE WHERE WANT IS NOT A FUNCTION OF NEED.

God Bless, Rad

This (actually all of it) was very clear.
Thank you, Rad.

God bless,

Wow, very clear!
From this moment on I will always name the planet last when describing an astrological set.
